On June 23, 1917 George Herman Ruth, Jr. walked the first batter in a game against the Washington Senators. The Babe was then was ejected for punching the umpire. Boston Red Sox pitcher Ernie Shore then retired the next 26 batters in a row. Sounds like a no-hitter to me, but apparently not everyone agrees.
Shore later become Sheriff of Forsyth County, North Carolina, near his home in East Bend, and led the 1950s effort to build a minor league park in Winston-Salem. When I lived in Winston-Salem, I attended several Winston-Salem Warthogs games in Ernie Shore field.
According to the official rules (as interpreted on Wikipedia), Ernie Shore did have a no-hitter but not a perfect game. Many are the pleasant evenings we’ve spent at the ballfield named for him. Alas, though his name is still on the plaque inside the park, it’s no longer called Ernie Shore Field but the Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
