I read in today’s New York Times about publication of the final volume of DARE, the Dictionary of American Regional English. This project was started at the University of Wisconsin by Prof. Frederic G. Cassidy, who passed away in 2000.
I had the great pleasure of studying with Prof. Cassidy, who was one of the readers of my Ph.D. dissertation on 9th-centry Anglo-Saxon sermons. He was a true gentleman and scholar. I’m sorry that he did not live to see the completion of the project, but it certainly stands as his monument.

hi, cleve. i got here by clicking around your post on fasola about the wrightsville beach mag story. i’ve coveted dare since i first heard it was in the works a long time ago. i can perfectly well afford it now and, should i live long enuf, i expect i’ll get around to buying it entire, and spend my final years being ravished by the variety of american argots. i have a 12 or so volume set of the oed which i bought when i was 25, and beaucoup other dictionaries littered around this house, but dare is what i really want. may we sing together anon, perhaps at rutherfordton in december. best wishes, stevec
